After speaking with a friend yesterday I was inspired to test out a recipe to help ease the congestion brought on by a cold. She was very stuffy and said she was on her way to the doctor to get some antibiotics. I am sure her medicine will go a far way to help her, but I thought, what if she had something non-synthetic that would offer some additional relief? I remembered reading a blog about homemade “Vicks Vapor shower disks” at http://www.savvysugar.com/Homemade-Vicks-Vapor-Sh... and thought it sounded easy enough. I modified her recipe a bit since I didn’t have any cornstarch, and I am not sure how I did this, but I forgot the salt! Anyway, mine came out just fine.
How did I make them you ask, well you need:
2 cups of baking soda
1 cup of water
12-15 drops of Essential oils eucalyptus, mint, and lavender
Muffin tin liner
Mix the baking soda and water together to form a paste, then add the essential oils. Mix again to blend. Place the muffin tin liners in the muffin tin (this mixture makes about 6 disks) then spoon the mixture into the muffin tin liner, and let it sit overnight. In the morning you can take the disks out of the liner. Mine were still a little moist so I let them dry on a drying rack.
As I added the essential oils to the mix, I started to breathe easier, and I wasn’t even congested! Needless to say, making the disk is as easy as suggested, and when I tried them out? WOW! I can’t wait to give them to her! If nothing else, the feeling I got from making these was absolutely worth it.

The next time you are feeling stuffy, try making these disks, drop them in your shower and take a deep breath!
Until next time!
